Here we go again. Political tensions are reaching breaking point in Bangkok, Thailand next week, when the court will rule in ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s assets-seizure case. Anticipating potential protests turning violent, foreign tour operators with tours due to arrive next week are being advised to switch their groups to out-of-Bangkok destinations. At least two countries – Australia and Canada – have issued advisories to their citizens to consider safety matters very carefully when travelling to Thailand, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand.

Still remember scenes of burning buses after street protests turned ugly in April last year? And the forced closure of Suvarnabhumi Airport at the end of 2008? You need to be wary indeed. Check with your travel agent for the latest updates and travel at your own risk.

By Travel Agency Singapore:

Universal Studios Singapore opened yesterday to overwhelming response! About 75, 000 people visited Sentosa yesterday, when both the Resorts World Sentosa casino and theme park opened. And if you’re looking for the preview tickets to Universal studios, you’re too late. They have been sold out for the eight-day sneak-peek period.

Be prepared for queues, queues and more queues! Those who were there for the opening day had to queue for entry into the casino or the restaurants.

Excerpts from the CNA:

Among the many highlights, visitors can travel back in time to the ancient world of Egypt, and the long lost land where dinosaurs come alive.

Fast forward to the future, the theme park features a sci-fi city where visitors can experience inter-galactic battles.

Of course, a theme park would not be complete without replicas of hit animated films. Universal Studios Singapore is also showcasing the fairytale world of Shriek, and the dense, tropical jungle of Madagascar.

Travel Agents Frustrated By Resorts World Sentosa

Resorts World Sentosa

In Singapore news today: Travel agents are frustrated by the staggered openings of Resorts World Sentosa. Yesterday, RWS announced it would open its casino and theme park on Sunday, but rides and shows would not begin operating till next month.

Travel agents contacted by The Straits Times yesterday said they are becoming increasingly frustrated by what they described as RWS’ ‘fits and starts’ approach to opening.

They say that as a result, they cannot close sales of travel packages: Many of their customers are families who are unwilling to travel to Singapore unless the theme park is fully open.

I’ve been seeing a lot of RWS ads on Singapore TV recently. And I’ve heard from my friends in other countries that they too have seen these ads on their local TV stations. Of course, these ads look very nice, with the Universal Studios included inside. They give the impression that everything is open now. I suppose they are “open”, just that you cannot take any rides. So what’s the point? Looks like RWS is very eager to draw visitors even before USS can fully open.

Singapore Casino Opens On Chinese New Year

Finally, we have a date for the opening of Singapore’s first casino! Resorts World Sentosa casino will open on 14 February 2010 12.18pm. This is a very auspicious hour. Woot! Or should I say: Huat ah!

It will be a soft opening with a private ceremony. The Universal Studios theme park is not ready to open yet. It is scheduled to open next month. But visitors will still be able to get a preview of the theme park in the evenings. For a ticket price of $10, visitors get to be among the first to walk about the park. There won’t be any rides or shows running though. The tickets are rebated by a same—value dining voucher. You can go to the box office at the Universal Studios Singapore front gate to purchase tickets for another day, as there will be no same—day ticket sales available.

Will you be making a trip to the casino to try your luck?

I guess by opening on the first day of the Chinese New Year, the casino is effectively “born” in the year of the tiger. So if the casino is the tiger, what are you?
