More Duty-Free Liquor Options for Travellers

Reported by Travel Agency Singapore news

Travellers arriving in Singapore from April 1 will have more reasons to cheer, and with more options to “cheers!” with. Singapore Customs will allow an additional one litre of wine or one litre of beer in lieu of one litre of spirits.

Previously, the duty-free allowance is one litre each for spirits, wine and beer. From April 1, travellers have the additional choice of bringing in either more duty free wine or duty free beer to replace the duty free allowance given to spirits.

A traveller has to declare any excess quantities of liquor and pay duty and GST on them.

I’m pretty sure the duty-free liquor shops at Changi Airport and other ports will stand to gain from this relaxation of the rules.

Well, this is good news for wine lovers or beer drinkers. I’ll drink to that! Cheers!

Singapore 18 March 8.28am. That is the time when the rides in Universal Studios Singapore (USS) opened officially to the eagerly waiting public. It is a soft opening. What this means is that visitor numbers are limited to smaller numbers per day and some of the rides are expected to be closed temporarily for creative adjustments.

To make up for any glitches, USS visitors will receive $15 in shopping and dining rebates with their entry tickets at the gate during the soft opening period. How long will this soft opening period last? According to USS, as long as it’s necessary.

The press had a field day at the preview 2 days ago. What did they think of USS? Mostly positive and many were excited by the thrills the rides brought.

Congratulations USS! I’ll definitely make a visit, but not so soon.

You can now book your Universal Studios Singapore (USS) tickets online at Resorts World at Sentosa’s website. Yes, the booking was open since yesterday morning. But the RWS server could not handle the load and kept crashing. There had been overwhelming demand from locals as well as overseas tourists.

Update 2011: Check for special discounts at Universal Studios Singapore ticket price promotion before you book! At certain times of the year, Universal Studios Singapore will offer special deals. In May 2011, you could get 20% off!

It looks much better this morning. The website looks fast and many people have successfully booked their USS tickets online.

The first 2 days 18 & 19 March are already sold out and tickets for the first weekend are also selling out fast. So if you cannot wait to be among the first to get into the USS theme park, I suggest you better book now to avoid disappointment!

As for what rides will be opened, there is still no confirmation. The official word is that 18 or 19 attractions will be ready, but some may be down temporarily for technical and creative adjustments. Signs on what rides are closed will be posted at the park’s entrance.

As for myself, I’m in no hurry to squeeze with the school holiday crowd and travellers. I’ll give USS some time to iron out the kinks before I try them out.

By Travel Agency Singapore:

Universal Studios Singapore opened yesterday to overwhelming response! About 75, 000 people visited Sentosa yesterday, when both the Resorts World Sentosa casino and theme park opened. And if you’re looking for the preview tickets to Universal studios, you’re too late. They have been sold out for the eight-day sneak-peek period.

Be prepared for queues, queues and more queues! Those who were there for the opening day had to queue for entry into the casino or the restaurants.

Excerpts from the CNA:

Among the many highlights, visitors can travel back in time to the ancient world of Egypt, and the long lost land where dinosaurs come alive.

Fast forward to the future, the theme park features a sci-fi city where visitors can experience inter-galactic battles.

Of course, a theme park would not be complete without replicas of hit animated films. Universal Studios Singapore is also showcasing the fairytale world of Shriek, and the dense, tropical jungle of Madagascar.

Further News on Open Skies & Budget Travel

In the news today: more on the budget air industry and the open skies agreements. We can expect more planes from exisiting low-cost carriers, and also new entrants to the budget airline industry. Hopefully, that will translate to lower prices, more frequent flights and to more destinations for us travellers. Also interesting is that Tiger Airways hit their 12 millionth passenger mark less than two months after getting their 11 millionth.

Excerpts from AFP:
Open skies, budget travel to power Asian airlines’ growth
SINGAPORE – The boom in low-cost travel and a growing web of open-skies agreements are expected to power long-term growth for Asian airlines after the global recession, industry bosses and analysts said.

Participants in the Singapore Airshow which ended Sunday expressed optimism that the region, particularly China, will lead the rest of the world to recovery after the most harrowing year in global travel.

Top aircraft makers Boeing and Airbus say Asia will be the world’s biggest airplane market in the next 20 years, with orders expected to surpass 8,000 passenger and cargo planes worth over one trillion US dollars.

A key demand driver is the explosion in budget air travel.

By the latest count, there are at least 45 low-fare airlines across Asia from Japan to Pakistan. Unlike premium airlines, many of them managed to soar above the economic turbulence.

Singapore budget carrier Tiger Airways announced it has brought forward the delivery of another four Airbus A320s to next year instead of 2016, bringing to nine the number of planes whose delivery has been accelerated.

The carrier, which started flying in 2004, also announced it had flown its 12 millionth passenger — less than two months after the 11-million mark.
